The auto industry needs to agree on a technology and pursue it together so that there's critical mass to support the subsequent building of infrastructure to support it. All this dabbling in this and that is futile and will never have the roll out potential.

We just need to keep developing alternatives. In the past, we've stopped being serious about alternative energies until the next crisis hits

The knowledge is there but the experts don't want to put it to use so we suffer using gasoline.

By far the largest greenhouse gas is water vapor. I don't think we should mobilize the world to rid the skies of water vapor. Carbon dioxide comprises less than 10% (perhaps as little as 5%) of the greenhouse gases in the sky and much of that is naturally produced and not man-made.

It will dominate because everything now is based on it and that will take a long time to change...and it will be very expensive.

On a repeat of Top Gear last night, I watched a piece on the new Honda hydrogen fuelled car which is only for sale in California at this time. It looks very impressive, and has a range comparable to a conventionally powered vehicle.

Blackice from Twin Cities...
May I remind you that the President's name is OBAMA without the bizarre embellishment. You needn't agree with him, in fact that you don't, could make this thread more interesting.
However, as a citizen, you owe the office respect. Just the basic stuff you learned at home and teach your children now. Schoolyard puns belong in the schoolyard.

I believe meetings between auto manufacturers around the world should convene whereby engineers would make presentations on all the possibilities. When concluded a vote should take place on the viable options available. Choose the top two and THE WORLD will focus on those and there will be uniformity and economies of scale.

This is why we needed to start building new refineries and do more drilling right here in the US two years ago.
If McCain would of won instead of Obummer...we might be working on those projects right now.
I know...big IF!

Yes, we realize this, use of renewable fuels, will take time and money.
But it must and will happen, with or without these players.
For a variety of reasons, environmental, economic, political and supply we must kick the oil addiction soon.

In response to CptnCanada's concern over killing electrons it should be noted that it takes over 200,000 times as much energy to kill an electron as is released by burning one gasoline molecule. By current energy standards we are 98 lb weaklings when it comes to mother nature. For the expected future, electrons are here to stay. If we could "burn" electrons our consumption in the US would drop from 12.000,000 gallons of gas per day to of order 50 gallons of electrons per day. At that rate, with the current size of the car's fuel tank, one would have , with one fillup, enough fuel for the life of the car with over 99% left when it hit the junk yard. Now that is real fuel economy!

not only do they need to get their acts together and develop more fuel efficient cars but we need to drill everywhere and put up 20 new nuclear power plants.

The motors that go to the moon get about 6,000 gal. per mile. Folks want a balance of power and efficiency. If you had never driven a high horse power V-8 then you would be ok with some little low power low torque ride.

Gasoline will be around for a long time to come, it may dominate or it may not. There will be an assortment of ‘fuels’ to choose from, all that matters is which one will you choose? Also, vehicles will need to have high MPG, a reasonable cost, are ‘multi’ fueled and very reliable.

It is becoming increasingly impossible to match the profitability of years past with refineries. They have long been the cash cow and will not settle for less profits. So finding creative new ways to drain consumers pockets will still be the main focus.

Don't you just love these articles that are written by one of the oil industry's butt kissers. I'm certainly not looking forward to "regular trips to the gas pump for quite a while."
What has happened to all of the talk about building our nation's transportation infrastructure to meet the transportation challenges of both today and tomorrow? Where are the mass transportation projects such as high speed trains, new and improved state and interstate highways, and the development of solar powered commuter vehicles?
To sever our reliance upon the products that are both choking our planet and devastating the economic stability of our nation, we must pro-actively invest in revolutionary technologies to truly realize an energy independence. Subsidizing archaic infrastructures and ignoring the ideas of progressive forward thinking individuals and scientists will only strengthen our energy providers stranglehold over consumers that they are currently and gluttonously enjoying.

Who are they kidding? Oil refineries are closing, as we read in another article posted today and this quote:
"None of us will sell more gasoline than we did in 2007," Tony Heyward, group CEO for oil giant BP, said during a recent earnings teleconference.
The weaning from oil began three years ago.
