More regulation needed for Canada oil sands

Reuters -- CALGARY, Alberta, March 17 - Steam-driven projects to extract crude from Canada's oil sands, often held up as more environmentally friendly than mining, have major drawbacks of their own that require more stringent regulation to fix, an environmental think tank said on Wednesday.

The Alberta-based Pembina Institute compared nine projects that employ "in situ" extraction methods -- where steam is pumped into the earth to liquefy the extra-heavy crude so it can be pumped to the surface -- and found all need to make improvements to varying degrees.

"The impacts of in situ have sort of been framed as low-impact oil sands development, but when you look at the data that isn't actually borne out," said Simon Dyer, one of the authors of the report, called "Drilling Deeper."

There's always room for improvement for anything. Think Tanks would not exist if they couldn't stir up some sort of potential problem.

way too much water in all its various forms needed to lift and extract oil. in the long run, water will likely be a much larger problem and scarce resource than collective forms of future energy.

Regulations have benefits and costs. Too often only the benefits are seen and the costs are ignored costing both resources and jobs. It would be good if all regulations were audited to find out the cost to get the benefit. Then it could be seen if certain regulations should be eliminated because they have little benefit for a good amount of cost.

The tar sans hold much promise, but the technology required to get the oil out with a minimal environmental impact are still far off.

Oil sands have always been expensive to recover the oil from. So much of the financial and environmental cost depends on how deep the sands are and how much steam it takes to make the oil flow at that level.

I have a relative who works in the tars sands in Alberta and he claims that they do need some new regulations. He said that they are killing a lot of wildlife by poisoning their water supply and several water bodies that had great fishing are now sess pools of dead fish and ducks. They used to be able to drink the water themselves when they first started working in the area but now they only drink bottled water that has been shipped in. His company was bought out by an American owner and he said they are worse and don't care about anything but money. The previous owner was much more cautious about the environment than the Americans.

Amazing how we put road blocks up even when they may stop or slow the production of a needed product. It has been said in the past that it will be approximately ten years before ALL the upgrades to the project are in place. If someone is willing to splash the cash then they should step up or shut up!!!

The Alberta government doesn't care about the envirnmental consequences of drill for oil and gas as long they get their royalties. Poisoned wells and deformed animals are just the cost of business.

I'm sure they'll regulate it more; and in some ways it's good. The less pollution the better and the safer the better concerning this. In other areas, the lawmakers just need to back-off of!
