for those who scream "drill baby drill" (which the mouthpiece of that movement has not said in a while btw), I guess you're expecting to have cheap gasoline for you and your kids and your grandkids. Hope you have a way to produce it, esp if you are not conserving.

while accidents happen, it's good that it was not as bad as it could have been. Yes, even production platforms can spill a lot of oil. But at least this one was pretty well contained (not fully, but well).

Let them drill. We need our own oil.

To the layman anything on the water that deals with oil is now a danger thanks to the uninformed gov't.

nigelb, no I don't watch Fox News, as I refuse to pay for cable. I do still like listening to classical music, but I buy my own so I don't have to depend on government-subsidized radio, and deal with their statist editorial stance.
And why would I like the McCarthy era? Disagreeing with communists and government persecution of them are two different things. That was heavy-handed statist intrusion into people's political views, just as government warnings about Marines returning from Iraq being possible terrorist material was unjustified fear-mongering.
I'm for less force and aggression, more liberty and free, voluntary trade. Less government, as little as possible, is my goal. I don't know if we can totally do without it, but I'd like to try. Until then, I'll start with just getting less of it, as it is the biggest use of force intruding into people's lives that I know of. It is immoral and inefficient; fight it with arguments of idealism or practicality, I don't care, just fight it.

... The Coast Guard is another Federal agency that doesn't know what it's doing! ...
... They're better than the other agencies - but the CG's admiral recently RETIRED! ...
... What kind of leadership does the Coast Guard have RE: high technology? ...

I keep seeing "A spill is a spill" in comments - except in the case of the Mariner production platform, there wasn't a spill. *Just* a fire - not that that isn't serious.

rfaramir - Oooh! I bet you get your misinformation from Fox "views" Note: I did not use the word 'news' in that last sentence. Yea, good ole Fox - "We distort, you report" Unfair and unbalanced. I must confess I would rather hear NPR's classical music than Hannity or the insane Glen Beck any day of the week. Better check under your bed before you go to sleep, there might be a commie hiding there! Go back to the McCarthy era, where you belong!

Many reporters do not have the technical knowledge and do not seek that knowledge in the 'rush to publish' and not have the story out as fast as the competitors. This applies to entire oil production and delivery system.

"the words were used interchangeably on NPR"
This goes to show how low NPR has sunk as it has gotten more communist and partisan. They don't care to get it right anymore, so long as their propaganda gets out. I used to have respect for them, thinking that because they played Classical music that they must have higher education and had everyone's best interests in mind. Maybe they used to care, or maybe I was just too innocent to notice their elitist snobbery when I was younger, but it's all political now.
But articles like this are good. I wasn't sure of the difference, either. I knew a 'rig' drilled, but wasn't sure what a platform was; maybe it drilled, too, but no, it produces. Thanks for clearing it up.

In order to be make good decisions, it really helps to be informed.
Every article I read about the Mariner accident gave conflicting information about what the Mariner actually is. This was the first article that cleared up that confusion and why I decided to post it here on GB.
That said, I did not care much for the egg analogy. I think of the difference more in terms of the difference between building a house and living in one.
While building a home, there are a lot of hazards from all kinds of heavy equipment and processes that are occurring with lots of folks performing specialized work. It can be an organized chaos.
However, once the home is finished, all the workmen and heavy equipment are gone and there are fewer dangers. A certain amount of caution is still needed; but in most instances, you are not likely to get run over by a bulldozer or backhoe or whacked in the head with a two-by-four.
FROM THE ARTICLE:
But once it was clear this was a production platform and not a drilling rig, getting it right did matter.
Why? Because whether you love fossil fuels or hate them, there’s a big difference between drilling (what a rig does) and producing (what a platform does) when it comes to issues of policy, safety and pollution potential.
First, the definitions:
•A rig refers to the piece of equipment that actually drills into the earth to tap into oil and gas reservoirs. These are mobile pieces of equipment that can either be self-propelled ships or vessels that are towed from one location to another.
•A production platform is usually a structure that stays in one place, pulling oil and gas from wells that have already been drilled. To the energy industry it’s an important distinction because the potential for trouble while drilling is generally a lot greater than on a production platform. There are different technologies involved, different processes, different kinds of workers. The cause of the Mariner accident is likely going to be very different from the cause of the Deepwater Horizon accident, which triggered the drilling moratorium.
It should also matter to opponents of the fossil fuel industry. If they’re going to call for changes, it might be best to focus efforts on the right problem. Making the drilling moratorium permanent — as some people demanded after the accident was reported — wouldn’t have prevented the accident at the production platform.

The oil rig was a catastrophe and the production platform was an accident. This is why the media is it's own worst enemy, say nothing until you have your facts right.
