What, there's a scam in NYC? As in the words of one famous movie quote, I am shocked!

I've ridden cabs on 5 different continents and I've had cabbies try to take advantage of me most in London and all over the U.S.

Since the passenger often took a taxi home, you would assume that he would have known if the driver took a 'scenic route'. So how did he increase the fare on the meter?

I lived in NYC, and it's well know that cabbies will 'take you for a ride' if you're unfamiliar with the area.
